Canada-Germany Workshop 2015 - Now Recruiting Ph.D. Students

November 13, 2015 (University of Toronto) - We hosted the Canada-Germany Workshop to forge collaborative research and unique graduate training opportunities under Germany’s DFG and Canada’s NSERC CREATE programs. The workshop, led by Prof. Peter R. Herman of the University of Toronto and Prof. Andreas Tünnermann of Friedrich-Shiller University Jena (photo left), included professors and graduate students (photo right) from the following institutions:
- Germany: Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF)
- Canada: University of Toronto, Laval University, INRS

We are recruiting new Ph.D. students for starting in the summer 2016. The unique training opportunities include:
- Research guided under multi-institutional and international collaboration amongst top-ranked universities in optical science and advanced light technologies.
- Internship in the "City of Lights", Jena, at Friedrich-Schiller University and practical industry-connected experience in the Fraunhofer IOF model of innovation and technology transfer.
- Internships at Canadian photonic industry partners.
- Training on Intellectual Property (IP) protection, entrepreneurship, market evaluation, technology transfer, licensing agreements, venture funding, scientific writing, communications, ethics in research, and project planning and management.

SPIE Photonics West 2014 (San Francisco) - PhD student, Kenneth Lee (pictured left), took first prize in the student competition for the Conference "Frontiers in Ultrafast Optics: Biomedical, Scientific, and Industrial Applications", at Photonics West, San Francisco during 1-6 February, 2014.
